The Book above speaks to the strategies parents and caregivers can use to build preschoolers self-esteem. The technique used is the S.H.I.N.E. technique, a teaching strategy developed by the author from years of international research with families. The SHINE technique builds on the developmental theories of Piaget and Vygotsky. In this way it allows for the influence of culture and tradition especially as it affects the definition of family.
Developmental theories are driven by expected developmental indicators. The book uses indicators from Canada and the Caribbean mainly. Using this book to teach how to build build preschoolers self-esteem simplifies your teaching as each chapter is completed with a summary, a critical question and activities.
Cognitively: there is a readiness to learn, inquisitiveness
Emotionally: the changes in the demeanor of the child are most noticeable where expressions of shame, embarrassment, conscious pride are now becoming evident
Physically: the torso lengthens and differences between children become more apparent with new growth centers being formed
Socially: the children reaching out to others, showing they care for others. They also show excitement at the discovery of the world around them
Research shows that the development of a positive, strong sense of self is a natural outcome of recognition of these growth areas. It follows that the development of a care and learning environment for the child should be the major concern of the caregiver.
The Book is unique as it begins by encouraging and advising parents and caregivers to develop and maintain their personal sense of self, utilizing simple techniques and activities. It goes on to teach the S.H.I.N.E. technique which is developed by the author after years of research with families and parents during her years as a Professor of Social Work.
The Book is used in the Caribbean in early learning programmes. It is also to be tested in Canada for use with young male parents. The teacher using the book must have a basic understanding of the challenges parents and caregivers of preschool age children face in their daily encounters. Using simple language, it is easily adaptable for handouts. A video series is being finalised by September 2016. Keep in touch by email with Dr. Wint to be the first to review this series.
The SHINE technique which the book presents was developed after years of research with families. The strategies are specific to the growth and development of the self-concept of preschoolers. I found Marianne Williamson’s quotation after I developed the technique and it really brings home the point being made. “We are all meant to shine as children do“.
